The report, Closing Achievement Gaps and Staffing High-Needs Schools: Recommendations from Ohio’s National Board Certified Teachers, contains policy recommendations generated by many of Ohio’s most accomplished teachers at the National Board Certified Teachers Policy Summit on November 16, 2006.
The report presents 32 recommendations to Ohio’s policymakers on what is needed to boost the achievement of all Ohio students to 21st Century expectations and to eliminate the disparities in outcomes associated with family and community wealth, ethnicity, first language or dialect, gender, and race.
The Summit was convened by the Ohio Education Association, the National Education Association, and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, along with an impressive sponsoring coalition of key education stakeholders.
More than 550 accomplished teachers brought their expertise and passion for the future of children and Ohio to bear on the vexing factors blocking student learning. The result of their work can be seen in the recommendations they have made for state and local policy changes – changes that can improve the conditions and practices essential to student learning and success.
Credit must be extended to the Center for Teaching Quality, particularly Barnett Berry and Melissa Rasberry – not only for their authorship of this report – but for their help in writing the policy briefs and preparing the 60 NBCTs who facilitated the discussions that were the source of the 32 recommendations.
The Summit doesn’t stop with this report. All stakeholders and citizens are invited to use the recommendations to advocate for sensible, robust changes for renewing Ohio’s public schools and communities.
